General Driving Policy Documents

Employees must have a valid state driver’s license in their possession for the appropriate vehicle class before operating the vehicle. Operating a government-owned or rental vehicle without a valid state driver’s license is prohibited. Additionally, all drivers whose job duties require the use of a motor vehicle will receive initial defensive driver training within three months of entering on duty and refresher driver training every three years thereafter.

There are three keystone documents BIA fire personnel must follow if driving wildland fire vehicles. These are:

• Chapter 7, Interagency Standards for Fire and Fire Aviation Operations
• Indian Affairs Manuel, Part 25 Chapter 4, Safety and Risk Management Program, Motor Vehicle Safety Program
• DOI Motor Vehicle Handbook
