BIA Timber Team

Under the Division of Forestry, the team supports Tribes and BIA agencies with the implementation of forestry-related projects.

The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Timber Team was established on June 9, 2019 and is based in Billings, Montana.

All current staff on the team are foresters with a wide array of educational backgrounds, and experience.

The team contributes to timber sale preparation, contract administration, forest development, forest inventory, timber salvage, and geographic information system (GIS)​ support on Tribal lands.

Current Capabilities:

  • Timber Sale Preparation: Unit layout, boundary painting, GPS, internal marking, and timber cruising
  • Sale Types:​ Green sales, permits, trespasses, and fire salvage​
  • Forest Inventory: ​Continuous Forest Inventory (CFI) and stand exams​
  • GIS Assistance: ​Stand-based delineation and mapping using ArcGIS Pro

Success Stories

  • Metlakatla Indian Community of Alaska

    The BIA Timber Team engaged in 132,000 acres of stand mapping (120 acres maximum/stand). The stands were delineated by species, size class, and stocking.

  • Flathead Agency/Confederated Salish and Kootenai​

    The goal of the project was to assist with the Boulder Fire Salvage Sale affected by the Boulder 2700 Fire, which affected approximately 2,230 acres. The BIA Timber Team assisted with cruise plots, leave tree marking, and unit boundary flagging.

  • Jicarilla Agency and Northern Pueblos Picuris

    The BIA Timber Team aided in the preparation of the Los Cuates Timber Sale, in Dulce, New Mexico. A few team members also travelled to Picuris Northern Pueblos to assist in the sale preparation for the Bison Timber Sale.

  • Winnebago Agency Omaha and Winnebago Tribes of Nebraska

    The BIA Timber Team assisted Rocky Mountain regional staff to complete a Continuous Forest inventory (CFI) for Winnebago Agency, which serves the Omaha and Winnebago Tribes of Nebraska. The team also worked with Rocky Mountain regional staff on the Speedway East black walnut sale located on the Omaha Reservation.
