Certain Tribes have their own source of funding for land consolidation under Secretarial Order 3367. Issued by the Secretary of the Interior in 2018, this order makes funds accessible to Tribes that participated in the Interior Department’s previous Indian Land Consolidation Program, between 1999 and 2014.
The Division of Trust Land Consolidation can facilitate voluntary acquisitions of fractional trust land interests for Tribes with access to these funds. Using its highly streamlined and automated acquisition process and Tribal funds for payments to willing sellers, the Division can quickly and cost-effectively consolidate lands in accordance with Tribal goals and priorities.
The Division of Trust Land Consolidation can also work with Tribes that did not participate in the previous Indian Land Consolidation Program, but that have other available Tribal funds to direct toward reducing fractionation through voluntary acquisition. Many Tribes recognize that dedicating resources to land consolidation constitutes a sound investment, allowing for better utilization of Reservation lands for economic development, housing, infrastructure, and other beneficial purposes.
Interested Tribes with available resources should contact the Division of Trust Land Consolidation at (406) 247-7913 for more information on how to initiate a land consolidation partnership.
