Located in North-Central Minnesota, the Red Lake Reservation is home to the Red Lake Band of Chippewa Indians.
In January 1997, the Red Lake tribe entered into a self-governance compact with the federal government thereby allowing the Red Lake tribe to manage certain trust and Indian services programs previously being managed by the BIA. One of these trust programs, Forestry, was included in the compact which allowed for management of the program by the tribe. As such, one “residual” Forestry position was established at Red Lake to oversee the government's trust responsibility to the tribe, and this Forester position still exists today at the Red Lake Agency.
