What is the Tribal Climate Resilience Annual Awards Program?

The Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Branch of Tribal Climate Resilience Annual Awards Program provides funding to federally recognized Tribal Nations and authorized Tribal organizations to support Tribal climate resilience.

The Tribal Climate Resilience Annual Awards Program supports both planning and implementation projects, including climate adaptation planning, community-led relocation, managed retreat, protect-in-place efforts, ocean and coastal management, and habitat restoration and adaptation.

How the Annual Awards Program Works

The Tribal Climate Resilience Annual Awards Program is a funding program open to federally recognized Tribes and authorized Tribal organizations. The program is divided into categories which fund different types of projects.

Most categories are competitively awarded. This means that project proposals are ranked by the Branch of Tribal Climate Resilience and external subject-matter experts based on published scoring criteria. The highest-ranking project proposals are then awarded funding.

Climate Resilience Projects Benefit Tribal Communities

The Tribal Climate Resilience Annual Awards Program seeks to help Tribes tackle severe climate-related environmental threats to their homelands.

Since the program’s inception, TCR has distributed over 1,050 awards totaling more than $240 million. Awards have funded planning efforts and project implementation for over 290 Tribes and Tribal organizations.

Annual Awards Program funds have supported a variety of projects to meet the diverse needs of Tribal communities. In 2023, the Annual Awards Program supported:

  • Climate adaptation planning;
  • Relocation planning and implementation;
  • Climate resilient and sustainable housing construction,
  • Climate resilient infrastructure construction for electricity, water, and geothermal heating;
  • Wildfire fuels reduction;
  • Greenhouse construction for increased food security of traditional foods;
  • Erosion mitigation;
  • Fishery restoration;
  • Improved wildlife monitoring;
  • Youth Climate Programming; and more!
